HexoLight 3000 Review
This review is for the 4000 model, the one with four lights.These work well and are a lot of fun. For the money, I’m very happy with them, for Rock Band and CD music. Depending on the amount of bass in your song and system, you have to adjust the “threshold” setting to maximize the effect.
I had a couple bad experiences with Rock Gear, both before my purchase, with their customer service, and after purchase, with the delivered product -but the very day I posted my bad experience on Amazing-dot-com, I was contacted by Rock Gear, who made things right by sending me replacement parts and bonus parts.
My bad experience before purchase:
- I used their online chat, and the person knew nothing about the product beyond what was in plain view on their website.
- I left the owner a voice mail asking a question before purchasing, and I never got a reply.My bad experience after purchasing:
One of the two HexoLight 4000s I ordered didn’t work. I determined it was the power supply, not the lights, by swapping the power supplies. Upon examining the bad power supply, it was DIRTY: covered in dirt and dust and grime, like it had kicked around someone’s shop floor for a week. How it landed in a shipped product brings on some quality concerns. The product was designed in the US, but is entirely made in China.How RockGear made it up to me:
- They called me back and apologized.
- They sent me a new power supply overnight.
- They sent me extra cables that allow you to place lights far away from the controller. I like these a lot.

Great product for a great price! – Honey White –
I have a 50’s style burlesque review show with five other girls. We dance at various bars and the lights are SO perfect for creating magic and ambiance without a lot of hassle or expense for us. They are so easy and light! I had no problems with setting them up or using them.

I bought 1 for my kids when they play Guitar Hero and 2 for the basement to compliment our ‘disco’ lights. I like the effects and that they are sound sensitive. You will have to adjust the sound sensitivity if you adjust the volume of your stereo/audio system. I like the price and free shipping. I got this mainly for the kids to use when playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but when it came we just plugged it in and fired up a Blue Man Group show on the dvr. Adding the hexolight 3000 in with our surround sound and big screen, the show was much more immersive. I was quite pleasantly surprised, and the kids feel like rock stars. The sets with more than 3 lights must be amazing.

HexoLight 4000 Review
First of all, because this information is not available ANYWHERE ELSE on the web – trust me, I looked – here are the dimensions of one pod: 4.75″ wide, edge to edge. 5.5″ wide, corner to corner. And 5″ deep. I have no idea why that’s so difficult for anyone else to provide, so there you go. You’re welcome. Now, on to an actual review…Initial impression, right out of the box, these things look and feel cheap. As another reviewer commented, they do not slide together smoothly. Some connections are too loose, others too tight. Also, the clear plastic covering the LEDs is also entirely too thin, and positioned in the wrong place; it’s behind the “silver” (it’s plastic, but painted to look like metal) frame, instead of the front. I think that was a poor decision.
And, the cords are too short, needlessly limiting the flexibility of arrangements. You might think you could arrange the lights in “any” configuration, but that’s not the case. If you wanted to put all four lights in a row, for example, with the control box at one end, you cannot do that, as each wire is only long enough to span the width of two pods. Therefore, whatever arrangement you choose, the control box needs to be in the center.
My initial quality impression was clearly not a good one, BUT, that’s because I hadn’t turned them on! Once these things are doing their thing, I have to say, they are awesome, and ridiculously fun. I cannot believe how much I enjoy them. They respond to music fantastically, and even though I had bought them specifically for Rock Band, but I find myself turning them on even just listening to CDs. I like them so much, I’ve mounted them on the wall. They look great, and now that I’m not actually touching them, all signs of their cheap construction have become almost entirely unnoticeable.
I bought two sets of four, and I’m glad I did. I’m actually considering buying more! They do have their flaws, and I felt it fair you be made aware of them, but nevertheless, they’re definitely worth buying – especially more than one set!

I had mixed feelings with these lights because they did not seem to hit the notes on tune with Rockband ? I think it may be because I only ordered one set . I think if you do order some of these lights , you should consider ordering the bigger set or at least two sets of the four lights. We bought two of the HexoLight 4000’s to make our Rock Band experience even better. We have one sitting on each side of the television and what a difference it makes. Rock Band always made us feel like we were part of the band, but the lights made it feel like you are actually playing infront of a crowd. We can’t play it enough. The lights actually flash to the beat. We are looking for reasons to invite people over to show them off. I did have a small problem with one of the lights (a lens was cracked on one of the lights), but the Rock Gear rep. responded proptly and had a replacement here in days. Very Satisfied with the product and the customer service.

Great product so far, but for me a huge problem is the “allows for any configuration” description.
You cannot arrange these differently without the [...] (for a pack of 3) extension cables from their website. So if I wanted to set these up straight across for example, I’d have to spend an additional [...] plus shipping!If I had known this, I would have purchased two of the 3 light sets instead. I looked on their website and I could not find anywhere other than their accessories store that would indicate this.
Surely not a buyer beware instance, just FYI to anyone who wants anything except the circle configuration.

This is like a strobe light on steriods. I thought it just worked with Guitar Hero but it works with great with my iPod dock. No cables to mess with-you can put it anywhere. It projects enough light to fill up my room which is about 12×15ft. I would recommend a fog machine to make it even better. Adds energy to any party!
